The Collective Carlos R. Andujar Amanda Eckes Lucas Oman Josh Price Bryan Duffy Chris Vasquez Preston Beebe About When Tides Collide The idea of a solo project initially began with a desire to have nice sleeping music to listen to. A 4-track was borrowed from a cousin and began writing the earliest material which, inevitably, would not see the light of day. Writing under the name of My Blue Heaven, music was created which incorporated the use of droning guitars and reverb-laden keyboards. The collection of songs accumulated until they were packaged together into the first, unofficial full-length, "the Sadness." After a year or two of songwriting the moniker of When Tides Collide was chosen to better reflect where the sound of the project was heading. In 2004/2005 writing of new material began for what would become the first full-length album, "This Swollen Heart Will Surely Burst." The record contained 10 songs with themes of self-pity and the loss of love. The record contained a folk feel and featured guest vocals from Tampa-locals, Evandora's Fiddle. After brief talks with Michael Wilson of Atlas Records in St Augustine, an agreement was reached and it was decided that Atlas Records would help with the release of the record. Local performances ensued in support of the new release. In the Spring of 2005, while attending a wedding in Savannah, Georgia, an introduction and friendship was kindled with violinist Lucas Oman. A musical correspondence was started and live performances followed shortly after. Performing as a guitarist/violinist duet, performances were held throughout the Florida area for a brief period of time and after Lucas' contribution of a string arrangement for a track on the 2006 EP,"The Dark, the Dense, the Wilderness", parted ways due to logistical reasons. In the Spring of 2006, a re-location to the Tampa, Florida, area took place and there writing and recording continued for what would be the finishing touches of, The Dark, the Dense, the Wilderness EP. While attending an Erin Tobey show in the area, contact was made with the opening act, Tampa singer-songwriter, Lily Richeson, also known in the area as Inertia!. After discovering mutual musical influences and friends, contact information was exchanged and a split release was decided upon. After two months of recording and writing, the songs were showcased at a performance at Transitions Skate Gallery in Tampa. These new batch of songs had a more "ambient" feel and incorporated the use of delayed guitars, computer-created drum loops, and field recordings. Around the same time, the finishing touches were put on the 6 song EP, "The Dark, the Dense, the Wilderness." With a goal of having a "symmetrical" feel (a similar beginning to the opening of the recording as well as the ending) minimalist themes and varied instrumentation were incorporated along with with the use of more drum sampling, reversed tape loops, violin arrangements, keyboards, and various vocal effects. In support of both releases, the WTC/Inertia! split and the EP, Bryan Duffy (the Comedy of Error, Pielos) and Josh Price (Pielos) were recruited to play drums and bass respectiveley. Together with Bryan's indie rock band, the Comedy of Error, decided to go on a small Florida tour. In the Fall of 2006, the idea was realized. When Tides Collide performed as a three piece band in Tampa, St Petersburg, Sarasota, Gainesville, and St. Augustine. The three went over the songs, decided on a setlist, and adapted the tracks for a live setting. The shows would feature loud moments of reverb/delay-laden feedback, quiet moments of hushed vocals, and even points of emotional screaming. The tour resulted in success and earned commendation from new-found friends and fans for both bands. |
